Fine Dining And Fine Living At Corona Del Mar

Are you looking to move to a place where you can enjoy fine dining and fine living? In this episode of What’s Cooking, I’m going to give you a tour of Corona Del Mar, an annex of Newport Beach. We’ll look at everything from beaches to delicious local fare so you can decide if this area is right for you.

Welcome To CDM

Corona Del Mar is an annex of Newport Beach. The locals call it CDM, and it’s a beautiful neighborhood. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, it used to be a village along the water full of one-story beach cottages. Now, though, it’s a little bit different.

Corona Del Mar is now home to multi-level mini-mansions with rooftop decks, putting greens, and Jacuzzis. The streets are lined with restaurants, bars, shopping, self-beautification services, and some of your favorite real estate offices. I’ve been coming to Orange County since I was a little boy, visiting my grandparents in Costa Mesa where they owned the Southern California Lumber Company. I fell in love with Corona Del Mar the first time I visited here in 2005—and I never left.

So if you’re ready to take a tour of Corona Del Mar, follow me.

Beautiful Beaches

One of CDM’s best shorelines is called Little Corona Beach. It is known as one of the hidden gems of beaches in Orange County. If you didn’t know about a disappearing trail leading down to it, you wouldn’t ever even know that it existed. Little Corona Beach is known for its panoramic views and, when it’s low tide, they’ve got amazing tide pools. There you can find tons of sea life to be enjoyed by all.

What makes this beach so special is that it’s very secluded. You wouldn’t know about it unless you’re a local or someone told you about it. This is one of my favorite beaches, especially in Corona Del Mar when you want to get away from Big Corona. That beach is crowded by 1000s of people coming inland. Many people don’t know about Little Corona, though, and you typically see the same faces of your neighbors at this beach.

Shopping And Dining

Another reason that everybody loves this area so much is they love coming to Fashion Island Shopping Center. If you’re unfamiliar with what Fashion Island is, it’s an outdoor mall with ocean views and ocean breezes. It has some of the best department stores around including Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Vuori, and one of my favorite men’s stores called Gary’s. You can also grab groceries at Whole Foods if you need to restock your fridge with delicious, healthy options.

This outdoor mall is great. You’ll see everyone cruising around with their kids and their dogs playing on the turf and going to restaurants. And of course, it wouldn’t be another episode of What’s Cooking if I didn’t start talking about restaurants. Some of my favorite restaurants at Fashion Island are Cafe R+D—where you can get amazing ahi tuna tartare.

I’m also a big fan of Canaletto Ristorante, a delicious Italian restaurant. I get the Coe Secoe E Amerone which is a filet mignon and red wine risotto. There’s only one other location at the Venetian in Las Vegas, and I highly recommend either location. If you like hamburgers, another great restaurant you’ve got to check out is Hopdoddy Burger Bar. I’m also am a big fan of Sushi Roku. So if you’re a sushi fan, go check it out.

Another cool thing about Fashion Island is that you can go buy a Tesla or Lincoln there. They have two automobile stores, so if you want to do some really big shopping, this outdoor mall has it.

More Delicious Eats

Not all the restaurants in Corona Del Mar are located at Fashion Island. On the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and MacArthur Boulevard are two of my favorite restaurants: Gulfstream and The Bungalow. If you love seafood, you’ve got to go to Gulfstream. They’ve got an oyster bar, grilled shrimp, and one of the best Tito’s Greyhounds on the block. Many people have a lot of fun sitting in Adirondack chairs, smoking cigars on the patio, and drinking Greyhounds.

I also really enjoy The Bungalow, known for its thick steaks and martinis. I love their New York steak and I even love their pan-roasted chicken breast with avocado and sun-dried tomatoes. You’ve got to try it. You can pretty much walk from any restaurant to the cleaners, your favorite local real estate office, or your friend’s house to their rooftop deck for a barbecue.

I can’t forget about my favorite restaurant in Corona Del Mar called Bandera. They are known for their rotisserie-style chicken and prime rib. You’ve got to check it out if you’ve never been there. There’s also one other restaurant in CDM that serves prime rib. It’s famous and it’s called Five crowns. Make sure you try it!

The Cost Of Living In CDM

As you can see, there are many reasons people love living here in Corona Del Mar. You might want to know how much it costs to live in CDM, so I’m going to tell you.

The most expensive homes in Corona Del Mar are on Ocean Boulevard. They range from $5 million all the way up to $35 million. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t afford to live in Corona Del Mar. As you go a couple of blocks in from the beach, it gets a little bit more affordable. The average cost for a home in Corona Del Mar is starting in the $1.6 million range for a back unit.

Many of the homes in Corona Del Mar have a front unit and a back unit. The more desirable homes are the front unit, and they cost more money because there’s a yard and you’re not in the back of the unit. Back units are starting at about $1.6 million and the front units usually are about $2 million to $4 million.

There are also townhomes and condos located sporadically around Corona Del Mar, though not in the village itself. You’re lucky if you can get something for $1.39 million. There are not so many of them, and they’re very small—from 1,000 to 1,500 square feet. So if you’re looking for these types of properties, you’re going to be starting at about $1.3 9 million up to about $2.5 million.
